Fred Thompson..swings both ways?

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

The latest flap over Fred is his insistance that he never worked for a prochoice group..or as the right likes to call it..pro-abortion folks. Freddy has denied it..then said he doesn’t recall..and then just ignored some folks that inquire about his affiliation with prochoice folks..

Here is a NYT piece that gives us some facts on Freddies efforts on behalf of a prochoice family planning group. Maybe that will jog his memory.

Voters Rights get struck down.

Voters Rights

Those wonderful activist judges in MI. The Supreme Court of the state of Michigan has ruled in favor of Voter ID’s. From Jurist:

The Michigan Supreme Court Wednesday upheld a voter ID law in that state, ruling against critics who argued that the ID requirement is essentially a poll tax. The 5-2 decision was split down party lines, with the Republican majority deciding that since voters who don’t have a photo ID can vote after signing a sworn affidavit regarding their identity, the argument of a de facto poll tax was unfounded. Supporters of the ID law say that a photo ID is necessary to prevent voter fraud.

The law was initially passed in 1996, but former Attorney General Frank Kelly refused to prosecute under it, arguing that it was unconstitutional. The law was renewed in 2005. Numerous voter ID laws have been challenged in the courts, with inconsistent rulings across the states. Laws in Indiana and Arizona have been upheld, while one in Missouri was struck down last year. Top Republican Presidential Contender? None Of The Above

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

The Democratic Presidential hopeful field is one that pleases most Democratic voters. In fact, although Hillary Clinton holds on to an early lead in polling, most Democratic voters say they would be fine with any one of the top three or four candidates winning the White House.

On the other side of the aisle, things aren’t so rosy. Among the top Republican Presidential wannabe’s, the top choice among Republican voters seems to be “None of the Above.” Predictably, the far right of the party is dissatisfied with the “liberal leanings” of the candidates on issues ranging from abortion to gay rights. And the continued spate of sex scandals, corruption, and President Bush are souring the party faithful more each day.

Now if only the Democrats were really the progressive party we wish they were, things might actually be going the right direction.

Ron Paul’s warchest

Monday, July 16th, 2007

From NBC’s Mark Murray
Our friends at Hotline made this excellent point: We all know by now that Paul has more cash on hand than McCain. But he also has more cash on hand than seven other presidential hopefuls combined (Tancredo, Brownback, Huckabee, Kucinich, Hunter, T. Thompson, and Gravel).

Dems Stomp Republicans in Fundraising

Monday, July 16th, 2007

The money tells the tale. During the April through June period, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) raised 17.6 million to the NRSC’s 8.6 million. In such a slim majority situation, I think most people would expect to see a flurry of fundraising taking place on the Republican side. The fact the Dems raised more that twice the Republican total speaks volumes. If the elections were held today, I think we’d see a lot of Republicans just staying home, and not a few voting Democratic.

As Democrats seek to expand their narrow majority in the Senate, the party committee far exceeds the amount of money Republicans have at their disposal, reporting a cash-on-hand balance of $20.4 million with a debt of $4.5 million. The National Republican Senatorial Committee has reported a cash balance of $5.5 million with no debt. — NYT

They aren’t raising cash, and they aren’t spending much either. Considering they have 22 seats up for election in 2008, compared to only 12 for the Dems, the numbers seem even more disparate.

The Republican deconstruction has been rather spectacular; I just which it had happened in 2003.
